North Rona
People lived on Rona from very early times right up to the late 1880s.
St Ronan’s Cell, an early Christian church, is situated in the old village on the south-west side of the island. The village houses were stone and turf constructions.
Villagers (thought to number around 30 souls) farmed the land using feannagen or lazy-beds, with cattle and sheep also reared. Naturally, the sea produced a substantial part of their diet.
Nowadays, an automatic lighthouse is the main human trace on the island.
